South Australian government updates Let's Stop Bullying resources to address AI-generated abuse material
Guardii Analysis
South Australia became the first state to update its Let's Stop Bullying campaign materials to specifically address AI-generated sexually explicit imagery and deepfake abuse targeting students. The revised guidance, released by the SA Department for Education on 3 October 2026, provides schools with protocols for responding to incidents involving synthetic nude images created from clothed photos of students, a tactic that has been reported in at least 22 South Australian schools since the start of 2026. The update instructs schools to treat AI-generated abuse material as equivalent to image-based sexual abuse under the state's child-protection framework and to refer cases to police and the eSafety Commissioner. The guidance also advises parents to preserve evidence and report immediately.
Response protocols matter, but the harm is often viral before it is reported. Detection technology that recognises the creation, threat or distribution of AI-generated sexual material in private conversations can block the image or alert an adult before it is shared beyond the perpetrator. Guardii's anti-CSAM detection module, which includes recognition of AI-generated and deepfake child sexual abuse material, operates in real time across messaging platforms used by young people, identifying attempts to create, coerce or distribute synthetic explicit imagery in direct-message exchanges. The system flags the conversation for immediate intervention, enabling a parent or school to act before the material is weaponised or circulated, addressing the speed and stealth that make AI-generated abuse particularly destructive.
