Snapchat rolls out expanded in-app warnings for teen users on sextortion risks

Guardii Analysis

Snap Inc. announced new safety features including expanded warning messages that appear when a teenager receives a message from someone they do not know, explicitly cautioning users about sextortion tactics and the risks of sharing intimate images. The warnings are triggered by contact from accounts that do not appear in the user's friend list and provide on-screen advice about blocking and reporting, building on earlier measures that restrict contact from unknown adults.

Warnings at the point of first contact serve as a deterrent but do not evaluate the substance or trajectory of the conversation that follows. Real-time pattern detection provides a continuous safety layer as exchanges develop, recognising escalation, coercion and manipulation even when initial contact appears benign. Guardii monitors direct-message conversations across Snapchat, Instagram, Discord, Roblox and other platforms, identifying grooming and sextortion dynamics as they unfold and surfacing children at risk to parents, schools or law enforcement before compliance or acute distress occurs. The system operates as a Meta Business Partner and is backed by Startmate, analysing threat patterns rather than reading every message and enabling rapid escalation to the appropriate authority in an emergency.
