Sextortion Tips to Wisconsin DOJ Nearly Triple in One Year
Guardii Analysis
Sextortion tips forwarded from the national CyberTipline to the Wisconsin Department of Justice nearly tripled from 230 in 2024 to 650 in 2025, mirroring a nationwide surge in internet crimes against children, with Madison police reporting that perpetrators often pressure 14- to 16-year-olds to send explicit images within minutes of initial contact and then threaten to distribute the material unless the victim pays, while investigators note that many cases involve overseas offenders and that officers prioritise immediate outreach to ensure targeted children and families are safe and aware of crisis resources. The Madison Police Department assigned two detectives in 2024 to investigate Internet Crimes Against Children cases, most of which stem from tips forwarded by service providers through the CyberTipline.
Sextortion offenders rely on speed, isolation and the victim's silence to succeed; the window between first contact and coercion can be measured in hours. Guardii's anti-sextortion module detects the characteristic progression of financial and image-based extortion in real time across Instagram, Snapchat, Discord, Roblox and other platforms, flagging rapid escalation, demands for images or payment, and expressions of fear or distress before a child sends material or money, surfacing the threat to a parent or school counsellor in time to intervene. Because the platform reports the pattern and severity of the exchange rather than its content, it respects privacy while closing the operational gap that allows sextortion to proceed undetected until a tip arrives days or weeks later, when the harm has already occurred.
