Research Shows 97% of School Deepfake Victims Are Female, With Most Cases Sexually Explicit

Guardii Analysis

Cybernews research published October 27, 2026, found that 97 percent of identified school deepfake victims were female, with most cases involving sexually explicit imagery. The findings highlight the gendered nature of AI deepfake abuse in educational settings, with victims facing humiliation, reputational damage, depression, PTSD symptoms and sexual trauma. The UK Online Harms Early Warning Working Group responded by creating safety guidelines urging school administrators to remove children's full names from captions and replace identifiable close-up photos with distant shots, blurred images or photos taken from behind.

Defensive measures that ask schools to reduce the visibility of children online address one pathway for image acquisition but do not prevent abuse occurring through photos already in circulation, images obtained through social connections, or material solicited directly from targets. The operational gap lies in the conversation where deepfake imagery is distributed, where victims are coerced into providing additional material, and where sextortion demands escalate. Guardii's protection-for-women and anti-sextortion detection modules identify these threatening patterns as they occur in direct messages, recognizing sustained targeting, escalating coercion and the distribution of non-consensual imagery in real time across platforms including Instagram, Snapchat and Discord, blocking the abusive contact before it reaches the target and surfacing a child or young woman in acute distress to a parent, school safeguarding lead or law enforcement.
