Reports of Online Enticement to NCMEC CyberTipline More Than Double from 186,000 to 456,000 Between 2023 and 2024

Guardii Analysis

Reports of online enticement submitted to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children CyberTipline more than doubled from 186,000 in 2023 to 456,000 in 2024, prompting the FBI to issue a national public safety alert about the explosion of sextortion incidents. Financial sextortion overwhelmingly targets boys and young men, with 90 percent of victims who reported sextortion to the NCMEC CyberTipline between August 2020 and August 2023 being teen boys, and a large percentage of schemes originating outside the United States, primarily in West African countries including Nigeria and Ivory Coast.

A world-leading AI online-safety platform, Guardii detects financial and sexual sextortion in real time by identifying threats to distribute intimate images, demands for money or gift cards, escalating coercion, and distress or suicide-risk language in the target's responses. The sextortion detection module operates across Instagram, Snapchat, Discord, Roblox and other platforms where the 456,000 enticement reports originated, flagging the coercion attempt before the child complies and surfacing acute risk to a parent, school counsellor or crisis helpline. Detection at the point of contact closes the operational gap the NCMEC data exposes: the volume of targeting now exceeds the capacity of retrospective reporting systems, and the child is already harmed by the time a tip is filed.
