Queensland schools to trial AI tool to detect cyberbullying under new anti-bullying measures

Guardii Analysis

The Queensland government has announced a trial of artificial intelligence tools in schools to detect cyberbullying as part of a broader anti-bullying package. The initiative follows recommendations from the Anti-Bullying Rapid Review and will see selected schools pilot AI-powered monitoring systems to identify harmful online interactions between students. The measures also include enhanced reporting pathways and professional development for teachers in recognising and responding to digital harassment.

Detection technologies that intercept harm at the point of contact offer a more proportionate response to cyberbullying than blanket access restrictions. Guardii's anti-cyberbullying module, developed by a Meta Business Partner and backed by Startmate, identifies sustained targeting, escalation and coercion in direct messages across platforms including Instagram, Snapchat, Discord and Roblox in real time, surfacing a child under attack to a parent or school without creating a readable feed of private conversations. By flagging the pattern and severity of abuse before it compounds, targeted AI detection addresses the harm itself rather than limiting access for all students.
