NSPCC publishes briefing on young people's experiences of sextortion
Guardii Analysis
The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children released a briefing in September 2024 documenting children and young people's direct experiences of sextortion, a form of online blackmail involving threats to share nude or semi-nude images to extort money or force victims to act against their will. The briefing draws on contacts to NSPCC helplines and provides guidance for reporting and disrupting sextortion incidents.
Real-time anti-sextortion detection of the kind deployed by the Guardii platform addresses the operational gap this briefing exposes. By identifying coercive escalation patterns in direct-message exchanges across Instagram, Snapchat, Discord and other channels before images are shared or threats are made, Guardii surfaces a child in acute distress to a parent or safeguarding professional without requiring anyone to review the conversation itself, enabling intervention at the point of greatest leverage rather than after the harm has crystallised.
