Norway proposes raising social media age limit to 15

Guardii Analysis

The Norwegian government has announced plans to raise the minimum age for social media use from 13 to 15 years, with the proposal to be considered by parliament in spring 2025. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre stated the measure aims to protect children from harmful content and algorithms, and the government is exploring technology solutions to enforce the age limit more effectively than current parental-consent mechanisms.

Raising the minimum age for platform access does not prevent predatory adults from initiating contact with children who circumvent controls or use alternative services, nor does it address harm inflicted by age-peers within permitted spaces. Detection systems that monitor for escalation, coercion and exploitation patterns in direct messages provide continuous safeguarding across the environments children actually inhabit, rather than relying on a gate that can be bypassed. For schools and families concerned with protecting adolescents from grooming and sextortion, Guardii's real-time interception of hostile contact and its escalation pathways to parents and authorities offer a mechanism that adapts to risk rather than imposing a static threshold.
