NITDA warns Nigerians over rising sextortion threats, AI-generated explicit images

Guardii Analysis

Nigeria's National Information Technology Development Agency issued a public warning on 3 October 2026 concerning the escalating threat of sextortion, an online blackmail scheme that uses threats to release intimate images or videos to coerce victims into meeting perpetrators' demands. The advisory notes that sextortion affects children, teenagers and adults and typically begins on social media platforms, messaging applications, dating platforms or online games.

When regulators issue sextortion warnings, the operational challenge becomes identifying which conversations will escalate before coercion begins. Guardii's anti-sextortion detection module identifies the characteristic arc of a sextortion attempt in direct messages, including the initial trust-building phase, the transition to sexual content, the extraction of compromising material and the onset of threats, flagging the conversation to a parent, school authority or platform moderator before a demand is issued rather than waiting for a victim to report after the fact. That detection architecture, which reads threat patterns rather than every message, addresses the harm the Nigerian agency identified without requiring children to forfeit access to the platforms where they connect with peers.
