The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children reported on 19 August 2024 that CyberTipline submissions involving suspected AI-generated child sexual abuse material increased by 4,700 percent between 2022 and 2023, with the trend accelerating into 2024 as generative tools become more accessible and offenders migrate to encrypted messaging platforms where traditional hash-matching cannot detect novel synthetic images. NCMEC's acting CEO stated that the volume and realism of AI-generated CSAM now overwhelms manual review and that new detection methods capable of recognising manipulated and wholly synthetic abuse imagery are urgently needed.
