A study published in Nature Communications documents a significant increase in AI-generated child sexual abuse material circulating on online platforms, with researchers identifying over 3,000 unique AI-created CSAM images in monitored forums over a six-month period. The research highlights the use of open-source generative AI models to create photorealistic imagery and the challenges facing traditional hash-matching detection systems that rely on databases of known material.
Conventional CSAM detection depends on matching uploaded images against fingerprints of known illegal content, an approach that fails when material is synthetically generated and has no prior exemplar in a reference database.
