New research finds one in five teens received unwanted sexual solicitation online in past year
Guardii Analysis
A peer-reviewed study published in Computers in Human Behavior surveyed 3,200 adolescents aged 13 to 17 across the United States and United Kingdom, finding that 21 percent reported receiving unwanted sexual solicitation online in the past 12 months. The majority of incidents occurred via direct messaging on Instagram, Snapchat and Discord, with only 14 percent of victims reporting the contact to a parent or trusted adult, citing fear of device removal or disbelief.
The reporting gap represents the operational frontier: children in crisis need a mechanism that surfaces the threat without requiring them to self-disclose or navigate a platform's reporting interface. Backed by Startmate, Guardii monitors direct-message conversations for grooming, age-inappropriate contact and sexual solicitation patterns in real time, alerting a parent, school safeguarding lead or professional when a child is targeted, bypassing the child's reluctance or inability to report and ensuring that intervention occurs while the contact is active rather than after harm has escalated.
