NCAA Joins Bad Actor Program to Target Abusive Sports Bettors

Guardii Analysis

The National Collegiate Athletic Association has joined a coordinated enforcement initiative combining Signify Group monitoring technology with IC360 integrity services to identify and ban sports bettors who harass college athletes online. The Bad Actor Program follows an October 2024 NCAA study documenting the scale of betting-related abuse: artificial intelligence flagged more than 72,000 abusive messages from a dataset of 1.3 million social media posts and comments during championship events, with an average of one in three high-profile athletes targeted by prop bettors and over 540 abuse messages sent to basketball student-athletes alone. Signify monitors social media platforms for threatening or harassing messages targeting athletes, investigators identify perpetrators, and participating sportsbooks may revoke betting privileges for verified offenders.

Targeted pattern detection at the point of contact offers an alternative to post-publication monitoring and reporting. Guardii athlete-abuse detection intercepts hostile direct messages before they reach a young competitor, flagging sustained targeting and escalation in real time across Instagram, Snapchat, Discord, Roblox and other platforms where abuse occurs. By surfacing threat patterns rather than simply cataloguing every published comment, the system enables school officials and sporting bodies to intervene while a crisis is still containable, and to escalate verifiable threats to law enforcement or platform trust-and-safety teams with the shape and seriousness of the contact documented, not merely a retrospective count of harmful posts already seen by the child.
