National framework needed to tackle school bullying, rapid review finds

Guardii Analysis

The Australian government's Anti-Bullying Rapid Review, delivered to Education Minister Jason Clare in October 2024, has called for a strengthened national framework to address school bullying and cyberbullying, finding that existing state and territory approaches vary widely in their effectiveness. The review examined the current patchwork of education department policies and the decade-old National Safe Schools Framework, recommending greater coordination and updated guidance to schools on responding to both in-person and online harassment of students.

Detection capabilities that flag harmful messaging patterns as they emerge address the conduct itself, wherever it occurs, without requiring uniform policy mandates across jurisdictions or retrospective complaint processes that depend on a child or parent recognising and reporting abuse after the fact. Guardii's cyberbullying detection module identifies sustained targeting, escalation and coercive language in direct messages across Instagram, Snapchat, Discord, Roblox and other platforms in real time, surfacing a child in crisis to a parent, school or professional and enabling rapid escalation to the right authority in an emergency, while reporting the shape and seriousness of a conversation rather than handing anyone a feed of what was said.
