Meta to launch age-verification trial using facial analysis on Instagram
Guardii Analysis
Meta has announced it will begin a trial in the United Kingdom requiring Instagram users who attempt to change their date of birth from under 18 to over 18 to verify their age using facial-age estimation technology provided by Yoti, upload identification, or have their age vouched for by other users. The trial is part of Meta's response to regulatory pressure including the UK Online Safety Act and follows similar verification measures already deployed in the United States and other markets.
Facial estimation and identity upload both require users to submit biometric or personal data to establish eligibility, imposing a privacy and friction cost on the entire user base in order to enforce a categorical threshold. Once age is verified and access granted, these mechanisms provide no ongoing protection against the in-platform harms that affect children regardless of the accuracy of their birthdate: the unsolicited approach, the conversation that turns coercive, the solicitation of self-generated abuse material. Guardii, backed by Startmate and operating as a Meta Business Partner, detects these threats as they emerge in direct messages across Instagram and other platforms, identifying grooming, sextortion and CSAM sharing through conversational pattern analysis and intervening at the point of harm rather than at the point of entry, protecting the child within the interaction itself.
