Meta has announced global deployment of Teen Accounts on Instagram, automatically placing users under 16 into private accounts with restricted direct messaging, content recommendation filters, and parental supervision tools. The changes prevent adults whom a teenager does not follow from sending direct messages or tagging them in posts, and require parental approval for users under 16 to modify privacy and safety settings, with age-verification technology used to identify and migrate users who misrepresent their date of birth.
Platform-level privacy defaults reduce surface area for contact but cannot distinguish between benign and malicious interaction once the connection is permitted. A teenager who accepts a follow request from a groomer or responds to a seemingly innocuous comment has already bypassed the guardrail.
