Meta Launches Teen Safety Features Including Parental Supervision Across Instagram and Messenger

Meta announced on 3 September 2024 a suite of enhanced safety controls for teenage users across Instagram and Messenger, including expanded parental supervision tools that allow caregivers to view who their teens message and set time limits, alongside new restrictions that prevent adults from messaging teens who do not follow them. The measures apply globally and build on the platform's existing teen account protections, with Instagram moving all under-16 accounts to private by default and restricting contact from unknown adults.
Platform-level restrictions represent a necessary first layer of defense, yet they operate at the point of account access rather than within the conversation itself, leaving a window between first contact and harm. Anti-grooming and anti-sextortion detection that monitors the substance and escalation of direct messages in real time enables intervention at the moment of threat, flagging coercive or sexually exploitative language as it unfolds and surfacing a child in danger to a parent or safeguarding team before an offline meeting is arranged or explicit material is shared, a capability that complements access controls by addressing what happens after the gate opens.
