Meta has introduced new safety measures for teenage users on Instagram, including facial age estimation technology powered by London-based Yoti to verify users' ages when they attempt to change their date of birth to appear over 18. The update also places all under-16 accounts into private-by-default Teen Accounts with restricted messaging from unknown adults and content filters, rolling out in the UK, EU, US and other markets over the coming months.
Facial estimation and account restrictions address account creation and platform access but do not monitor the content of direct messages once a young person is connected. Detection modules for grooming and sextortion that scan inbound communication in real time can intercept harm after connection but before delivery, blocking predatory patterns directed at minors on Instagram and other platforms where young users maintain accounts. Meta Business Partner Guardii operates this point-of-contact layer, alerting parents or schools to hostile contact the moment it occurs rather than relying on retrospective reporting.
