Meta launches teen account safety features with parental controls and notification limits

Meta announced on 3 September 2024 that all Instagram users under sixteen globally will be automatically moved to Teen Accounts with enhanced default privacy settings, including restrictions on who can contact them, limits on sensitive content, and a sleep-mode feature that mutes notifications between 10pm and 7am, alongside new parental supervision tools requiring guardian approval for teenagers to change settings. The rollout began in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Australia in September 2024 with global implementation planned for early 2025, and includes AI-powered detection to identify accounts where users may have misrepresented their age.
Structural controls on contact and content visibility reduce some exposure but cannot evaluate the intent or escalation pattern of a conversation that does reach a teenager.
