Meta launches teen account controls with default private settings
Guardii Analysis
Meta has introduced Teen Accounts on Instagram, a new default profile type that automatically applies to users under sixteen and includes mandatory private settings, restrictions on who may send direct messages and app-use time limits. Young people wishing to change these safety controls will require parental consent, and Meta is deploying video-selfie age-estimation technology to detect users who have misrepresented their birth date during registration. The rollout begins immediately in several markets and will expand globally over the coming months.
Default-private settings reduce a young person's visibility to unknown adults but do not detect or disrupt exploitation tactics when contact has already been established, whether through a follow request the teen accepted, a shared group or off-platform coordination. Grooming unfolds through incremental trust-building and escalation across multiple exchanges; intervention depends on recognising those behavioural patterns as they develop. Real-time detection that flags coercion, solicitation and image-sharing pressure can surface a child in crisis to a parent or school before harm occurs. As a Meta Business Partner, Guardii monitors Instagram direct messages alongside Snapchat, Discord and Roblox, applying dedicated grooming, sextortion and CSAM detection modules that identify harmful dynamics without storing message content, enabling rapid escalation when a conversation turns dangerous.
