Meta announced on 6 August 2024 a suite of enhanced safety features for teenage users across Instagram and Messenger, including automatic nudity detection and blurring in direct messages, expanded parental supervision tools, and stricter default privacy settings for users under 16. The nudity protection feature uses on-device machine learning to detect and blur intimate images before they are viewed, prompting teenagers with resources and the option to block the sender, and applies to both received and outgoing messages to prevent sextortion attempts.
While Meta's on-device nudity blurring represents a step forward, it addresses only one vector of a multi-dimensional threat landscape. The approach disclosed to parents that their child received sensitive content but lacks the real-time pattern recognition necessary to identify grooming sequences, coercion tactics, or coordinated sextortion campaigns before exploitation occurs.
