Meta announced a comprehensive overhaul of Instagram's teen safety architecture on 15 August 2024, introducing mandatory private accounts for all users under 16, restrictions on messaging from adults they do not follow, and parental supervision tools that require explicit consent to disable. The changes, which will roll out globally over the coming months, also include content filtering to limit exposure to sensitive topics and sleep-mode features that mute notifications overnight.
While platform-level defaults reduce the surface area for opportunistic contact, they do not inspect the substance of conversations that do proceed. Detection systems that monitor the direct-message layer in real time—Guardii's anti-grooming and anti-sextortion filters, for instance—identify manipulative or coercive dialogue as it unfolds, flagging or blocking high-risk exchanges before they escalate, regardless of whether the account is public or private. This approach addresses harm within the channel itself, where restrictive settings alone cannot reach.
