Meta expands safety tools for teens on Instagram and Facebook following EU regulatory pressure
Guardii Analysis
Meta announced on 8 October 2024 that it is introducing additional safety features for teenage users on Instagram and Facebook, including defaulting under-18 accounts to private, restricting who can message teens, and limiting the content minors see in search and recommendations. The updates, deployed globally but accelerated in response to Digital Services Act obligations in the European Union, also include enhanced parental supervision tools and warnings when adults with no mutual connections attempt to contact minors repeatedly.
Platform-level controls such as account privacy defaults and contact restrictions reduce exposure but do not detect harm already in progress within existing connections or in spaces where parental oversight tools are not activated. As a Meta Business Partner, Guardii layers real-time conversational monitoring onto these structural protections, identifying grooming, sextortion and coercive escalation even when the contact originates from someone the child already follows or has accepted. The platform's anti-grooming and anti-sextortion detection modules flag predatory patterns as they develop, surfacing a child at risk to a parent or school safeguarding lead without requiring the adult to monitor every conversation manually, offering a complementary layer of early intervention to Meta's access and visibility controls.
