Meta expands parental supervision tools and raises minimum age for Messenger encryption

Guardii Analysis

Meta has announced changes to Messenger that will raise the minimum age for end-to-end encrypted conversations from thirteen to sixteen in most markets, and introduce new parental supervision features that allow adults to view a teen's contact list, message frequency statistics, and blocking activity without accessing message content. The company stated the changes respond to concerns from child safety advocates and regulators that encryption limits the company's ability to detect grooming and sextortion in direct messages. The policy will take effect globally in December 2026, with teens under sixteen defaulted to non-encrypted chats unless a parent grants permission.

Age-gating encryption preserves visibility for platform moderation but does not address the underlying risk for older teens who remain eligible, nor does it prevent offenders from migrating to fully encrypted services outside Meta's ecosystem. Guardii operates within encrypted and non-encrypted messaging environments, deploying on-device and privacy-preserving detection that identifies grooming and sextortion conversation patterns without decrypting or transmitting message content to a central server. As a Meta Business Partner, Guardii enables parents and institutions to monitor threat indicators rather than message text, providing the protective layer that functions across the age and encryption boundaries where platform-native tools lose visibility.
