Meta announced on 15 August 2024 that it is expanding Instagram Teen Accounts globally, implementing automatic privacy restrictions for users under 18 including private-by-default accounts, message restrictions from non-followers, and time-limit prompts. The update builds on measures first tested in January and marks Meta's most comprehensive platform-level response to regulatory pressure in the EU, UK and Australia regarding age-appropriate design and direct-messaging risk.
Platform defaults address the initial access layer but cannot identify or intercept high-risk contact once a teen accepts a message request or follows an adult account. Real-time detection of grooming behaviours, sextortion scripts and CSAM sharing—capabilities at the core of Guardii's anti-grooming and anti-sextortion filters—operates at the conversation level, flagging escalating threat patterns before material harm occurs and alerting a parent, school safeguarding lead or law-enforcement liaison when a child is demonstrably at risk.
