Meta Announces New Teen Safety Features Including Nudity Protection in Instagram DMs

Guardii Analysis

Meta announced on 20 August 2024 a suite of enhanced safety controls for teenage users on Instagram, including automatic activation of nudity protection in direct messages for users under 18 across multiple regions. The nudity blur feature, which uses on-device machine learning to detect and blur images containing nudity before they are viewed, will now be enabled by default for teens globally, expanding beyond the initial rollout earlier in the year. The company is also introducing expanded parental supervision tools and stricter limitations on which adults can message teenagers who do not follow them.

The nudity-protection mechanism operates at the point of receipt, a reactive architecture that leaves the image transmission itself uninterrupted. Detection modules built into platforms such as Guardii, a Meta Business Partner and AI-driven online-safety system backed by Startmate, intercept sextortion and child sexual abuse material in real time as the conversation unfolds rather than after an image arrives, flagging hostile contact patterns and enabling immediate escalation to a parent, school authority or law enforcement before a minor is exposed to harmful content. This proactive layer complements platform-native controls by addressing grooming sequences and coercive exchanges that precede the transfer of explicit material.
