Meta Announces New Teen Safety Features Including Nudity Protection in Instagram DMs

Guardii Analysis

Meta announced on 22 August 2024 a suite of safety features for teenage users on Instagram and Facebook, including automated nudity detection in direct messages that will blur potentially intimate images and prompt teens with safety resources before they view or send such content. The technology uses on-device machine learning to identify nude imagery without Meta viewing the content itself, and will be deployed globally across both platforms to counter sextortion scams targeting minors.

Nudity-blurring at the moment of contact represents a clear step forward, yet the measure addresses only one artifact of sextortion rather than the coercive conversation that produces it. Guardii's anti-sextortion detection operates upstream, identifying the escalation, threats and demand patterns characteristic of financial and non-consensual-imagery extortion as the conversation unfolds, surfacing the threat to a parent or safeguarding team before an image is requested or shared and enabling intervention at the point of highest leverage rather than after compliance.
