Meta announces expanded safety tools to combat sextortion on Instagram and Facebook

Guardii Analysis

Meta announced in October 2024 a suite of new safety features designed to protect teenagers from sextortion on Instagram and Facebook. The measures include automatically blurring nudity in direct messages sent to users under 18, restricting adults with suspicious account behaviour from searching for or messaging teenagers, and deploying machine-learning systems to detect sextortion-linked accounts at scale. The company also introduced in-app education prompts warning teens about image-based extortion and established partnerships with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to expedite high-risk reports to law enforcement.

Platform-native controls reduce exposure but cannot detect harm unfolding in a conversation already underway. Guardii's anti-sextortion and anti-grooming modules operate downstream of platform restrictions, analysing the shape of direct-message exchanges in real time to identify escalation, coercion and solicitation patterns across Instagram, Snapchat, Discord and Roblox. Backed by Startmate, the platform surfaces a child in crisis to a parent or school without exposing message content, enabling intervention at the moment of manipulation and ensuring that a conversation flagged as high-risk reaches the right authority before material is shared or a threat executed.
