Meta announces expanded parental supervision tools and teen account restrictions on Instagram

Meta has announced a suite of enhanced safety measures for teenage users on Instagram, including default private accounts for all users under sixteen, restrictions on who can message teens, and expanded parental supervision features that notify parents when their child reports an account or piece of content. Teens will also be placed into the most restrictive content-control setting by default and will require parental permission to change it. The measures follow sustained regulatory pressure in the European Union, the United Kingdom and Australia, as well as ongoing litigation in the United States alleging that the platform's design harms young users. Meta states that the changes will be rolled out globally over the coming months.

Default privacy settings narrow the aperture but do not eliminate the risk in the conversations that remain: a restricted account still receives direct messages from approved followers, and harm escalates within that trusted perimeter.
