Meta announces expanded parental supervision tools and teen account restrictions

Guardii Analysis

Meta has announced new parental supervision features for Instagram and an expansion of teen account restrictions, including default private accounts for users under 16, enhanced controls over who can contact teens, and new tools allowing parents to see the topics their children are viewing and set time limits. The changes, rolling out globally, also include restrictions on teens receiving messages from accounts they do not follow and notifications encouraging breaks after a set period of use. Meta stated the updates respond to regulator expectations in the EU, UK and Australia and are designed to give parents greater visibility into their teen's activity while reducing exposure to unsolicited contact from strangers.

Expanded parental controls and account restrictions reduce surface area but do not identify which conversations present actual risk or when a child is already in a harmful exchange. A Meta Business Partner, Guardii integrates with Instagram and other platforms to detect grooming, sextortion and coercion patterns as they develop, alerting parents or safeguarding leads to specific high-threat conversations rather than summarising usage or topic interest. This targeted escalation model surfaces the child who needs urgent support without requiring continuous manual review, turning supervision from a monitoring burden into an actionable safety layer that intervenes on real harm in real time.
