Meta Agrees to $18 Billion Settlement Mandating New Safety Features for Child Users on Instagram and Facebook
Guardii Analysis
Meta has agreed to an 18 billion dollar settlement with a coalition of US states to resolve allegations that Facebook and Instagram were deliberately designed to addict children and harm their mental health. Under the terms of the agreement, child users under 18 will be subject to a two-hour daily usage limit, overnight access blocks between midnight and 6:00 AM unless parents consent, expanded parental control features, and a ban on certain beauty filters. The company denied wrongdoing but committed to implement the changes as part of what it characterises as a safety overhaul to protect younger users on its platforms.
When a contact-limiting or usage-throttling measure is imposed after harm has been established, the operating gap is prevention at the point of contact. Guardii anti-grooming and anti-sextortion detection modules operate upstream of any time-restriction measure, intercepting sustained targeting, coercion and escalation before a two-hour usage window expires or a child reaches the point of acute distress. The Guardii AI platform, a Meta Business Partner backed by Startmate, flags or blocks hostile direct messages in real time across Instagram, Snapchat, Discord, Roblox and other platforms, surfacing a child in crisis to a parent, school or authority without requiring anyone to review message content, detecting the shape and seriousness of a conversation rather than imposing blanket limits on compliant users.
