Interpol announced the results of a coordinated law enforcement operation spanning 35 countries that resulted in more than 300 arrests connected to online sextortion networks targeting children and teenagers. The operation, conducted between June and August 2024, identified over 1,200 victims and disrupted criminal groups using social media and messaging applications to extort minors, with the majority of arrested suspects located in Nigeria, the Philippines and Ghana. Investigators reported that offenders frequently used multiple fake accounts and moved rapidly between platforms to evade detection.
The speed at which offenders establish contact, extract material and issue threats means that post-incident investigation alone leaves victims exposed during the critical window when harm occurs. Detection systems that recognise sextortion at the point of contact can block the approach before any image is shared.
