Internet Watch Foundation Reports 380% Surge in AI-Generated Child Sexual Abuse Material in 2024
Guardii Analysis
The Internet Watch Foundation reported a 380 percent increase in AI-generated child sexual abuse material in 2024 compared to the previous year, actioning 245 reports containing 7,644 images, of which 7,063 were realistic enough to be classified as criminal pseudo-photographs under UK law and 98 percent depicted girls. The IWF confirmed the first realistic AI-generated CSAM videos in 2024, marking an evolution from static images to motion content. Separately, online-enticement reports to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children grew 192 percent between 2023 and 2024, from 186,000 to over 546,000, reflecting both the REPORT Act mandate that came into force in May 2024 and an underlying escalation in offender activity exploiting generative AI tools to create and distribute abusive material at scale.
Guardii closes the detection gap opened by synthetic content. Its anti-CSAM module, enhanced to recognize AI-generated and deepfake material, blocks hostile contact before it reaches the target and surfaces children in crisis to the adults and agencies responsible for their safety. Because the platform detects threat patterns rather than reading every message, it identifies the coercive dynamics that accompany the solicitation or distribution of AI-generated abuse, enabling intervention at the point of contact. Where criminal-justice systems are still calibrating their response to synthetic material, technology backed by Startmate and deployed across major platforms including Instagram and Snapchat delivers immediate protection by intercepting the predatory conversation itself, not merely the artifact it produces.
