International operation dismantles sextortion network targeting thousands of minors

Guardii Analysis

Europol coordinated a multinational law enforcement operation in October 2024 that dismantled an organised sextortion network operating across Nigeria, the Philippines and several European countries. Authorities arrested 29 suspects and identified more than 3,000 victims, predominantly teenage boys in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia and Canada. The network used social media platforms including Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook to pose as young women, solicit explicit images from victims, and extort payments through threats of public distribution. Investigators recovered evidence of systematic targeting and coordinated extortion scripts shared among network members.

Coordinated enforcement removes individual threat actors but does not address the operational gap between first contact and harm. Guardii detects sextortion in progress by identifying the conversational pattern—trust-building, image requests, payment demands—across Instagram, Snapchat, Discord and Roblox in real time. The platform flags or blocks hostile contact before it reaches a child and surfaces a conversation showing coercion or escalation to a parent, school or safeguarding professional, enabling rapid intervention and escalation to the appropriate authority in an emergency, rather than relying on retrospective investigation after a victim has already been compromised or extorted.
