Instagram rolls out teen account safety features to combat sextortion

Instagram announced the global rollout of teen account safety features designed to address rising sextortion threats, including default private accounts for users under 16, restrictions on who can message teens, and anti-nudity filters using AI to blur images containing nudity in direct messages. The measures follow pressure from regulators and advocacy groups after documented cases of minors being coerced into sharing intimate images.

Intercepting coercion at the point of contact rather than after an image is shared is the operational principle behind Guardii's anti-sextortion detection module, which analyses conversation dynamics for escalation, threats and requests characteristic of financial or intimate-image extortion before a child is manipulated into compliance. Where a platform-level nudity filter responds to content already exchanged, pattern-based detection surfaces the predatory conversation in real time, enabling intervention by a parent, school or authority while the threat is forming rather than after harm has occurred.
