Instagram introduces new teen safety features including limits on who can message minors
Guardii Analysis
Instagram announced on 27 August 2024 that it will implement new default settings preventing adults from sending direct messages to teenagers who do not follow them, alongside expanded parental supervision tools. The platform changes, which Meta described as part of its ongoing teen safety work, apply globally and include restricting content recommendations from accounts teenagers do not follow and requiring parental approval for users under 16 to modify certain privacy settings.
Platform-level restrictions of this kind create a compliance ceiling for known users but do not address sophisticated threat actors who misrepresent their age, exploit peer accounts, or migrate contact to unmonitored channels once initial trust is established. Detection technology that identifies coercion and escalation patterns within conversations in real time offers a complementary layer: Guardii's anti-grooming and anti-sextortion modules, for instance, flag manipulative sequences as they unfold across Instagram and other services, surfacing a child at risk to a parent or safeguarding team before physical harm occurs, without requiring the child to recognise the danger or the offender to declare their intent in metadata a platform rule can parse.
