How To Fight Back Against AI Powered Sextortion
Guardii Analysis
Generative artificial intelligence has transformed financial sextortion by enabling criminals to fabricate explicit images from ordinary photographs of minors without requiring the victim to send compromising material first. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the FBI have recorded massive increases in incidents involving generative AI, with the FBI reporting a 30 percent rise in sextortion tips between October 2024 and March 2025 compared to the prior year. Law enforcement agencies have launched global operations in response, including an October operation hosted by the UK National Crime Agency that mapped infrastructure behind fraudulent websites and exposed peer-to-peer laundering networks connecting the United States, the United Kingdom and West Africa. Analysis by TRM Labs found that sextortion schemes accounted for nearly 17 percent of direct payments received by one cryptocurrency provider this year.
AI-generated imagery has eliminated the initial consent barrier that once constrained sextortion, creating synthetic abuse material from a single public photograph. Where traditional detection flags known imagery, Guardii's AI-driven CSAM and sextortion detection modules identify the coercive conversation itself: the manufactured image presented as leverage, the escalating financial demand, the threat to distribute. Operating across Instagram, Snapchat, Discord and other platforms where AI sextortion proliferates, Guardii blocks hostile contact before a fabricated image reaches the child, surfaces the threat pattern to a parent or school safeguarding lead in real time, and captures the technical and behavioral evidence needed for law enforcement to pursue overseas networks, neutralizing the weaponization of generative AI at the point of first contact rather than after synthetic material is deployed.
