Global operation dismantles major online child exploitation network across 12 countries

Guardii Analysis

Europol announced on 29 September 2024 the results of a coordinated operation across twelve countries that led to 84 arrests, the identification and safeguarding of 37 children subject to ongoing sexual abuse, and the seizure of digital devices and encrypted communications used to share child sexual abuse material and coordinate contact offences. The investigation targeted an online network that used mainstream social media platforms for initial contact with children before moving to encrypted messaging services to groom victims, extort explicit imagery and arrange physical meetings. Authorities seized more than 200,000 images and videos of child sexual abuse and identified offenders in Europe, North America and Asia.

Cross-border networks that migrate from visible platforms to encrypted channels after initial contact exploit the gap between public content moderation and private conversation monitoring. Real-time detection that identifies grooming patterns, coercion and escalation in direct messages enables intervention before an offender moves a child off-platform or extracts material. Guardii operates across Instagram, Snapchat, Discord and Roblox with anti-grooming and anti-sextortion modules that flag sustained targeting, manipulation and threats as they occur, blocking hostile contact before it reaches the target and surfacing a child in crisis to a parent, school or law enforcement authority. The system reports the structure and severity of a conversation rather than its content, enabling proportionate escalation and rapid coordination with police when a young person is in immediate danger.
