French Court Convicts Man of Using AI to Create Child Sexual Abuse Images
Guardii Analysis
A French court on 9 September 2024 convicted a 45-year-old man of possessing and creating child sexual abuse material after investigators found he had used artificial intelligence tools to generate realistic images of children in sexual situations. The court in Lyon sentenced the defendant to two years in prison, including 18 months suspended, and ordered him to register as a sex offender. Prosecutors presented evidence that the man had used commercially available generative AI software to produce the images and had shared some via encrypted messaging platforms. The case is among the first in France to result in conviction specifically for AI-generated child sexual abuse material and reflects growing concern among law enforcement and child-protection agencies that synthetic imagery both normalises abuse and can be used to groom victims.
AI-generated child sexual abuse material is often shared through direct messages on social platforms or encrypted channels, where it serves as a grooming tool or a coercive device in sextortion. Detection systems that identify the distribution of such content within private conversations, using image-analysis techniques that recognise synthetic abuse material without relying on known hash databases, can intercept the harm before it reaches a child or before it is used to desensitise or blackmail a victim. Guardii's CSAM detection module, built into a world-leading AI online-safety platform, identifies both photographic and AI-generated child sexual abuse material in real-time exchanges across Instagram, Snapchat, Discord, Roblox and other services, flagging the content to platform moderators and to parents or authorities without exposing the material to unnecessary viewing, and enabling the rapid reporting to law enforcement that prosecutions of this kind depend upon.
