FIFA reveal 240,000 abusive social media posts during 2026 Men's World Cup

Guardii Analysis

FIFA's Social Media Protection Service analysed more than 17 million posts and comments during the 2026 Men's World Cup held in Canada, Mexico and the United States, referring 477,000 for human review and verifying 240,000 as abusive. One in five categorised messages were racist, 14 percent contained violent threats, 12 percent involved xenophobic abuse, and more than half of the individuals monitored received at least one abusive message during the tournament, with the service also intervening to protect match officials from doxing.

Guardii's athlete-abuse detection module operates on the same principle FIFA applies to tournament participants but extends protection across the entire competitive lifecycle, not just marquee events. A Meta Business Partner backed by Startmate, Guardii monitors direct-message traffic in real time across platforms including Instagram and Snapchat, flagging patterns of racist abuse, violent threats, doxing attempts and sustained targeting before they compound into a crisis, surfacing threats to club welfare staff or governing bodies and enabling rapid escalation to law enforcement when a credible physical threat emerges, protecting junior and professional athletes alike without requiring platforms to hand over message content.
