FBI warns of spike in financially motivated sextortion targeting minors

Guardii Analysis

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has issued a public alert warning of a sharp increase in financially motivated sextortion schemes targeting minors across the United States. The bureau reports that offenders, often operating from West Africa and Southeast Asia, use fake social media profiles to befriend children on platforms including Instagram, Snapchat and gaming apps, then coerce them into sharing explicit images before demanding payment under threat of distribution. The FBI states that at least 12,600 victims were reported in the twelve months to March 2024, with losses exceeding 48 million dollars, and notes that many victims do not come forward.

Sextortion at scale exploits the gap between the moment of first contact and the point at which coercion becomes visible to a parent or platform moderator. Guardii's anti-sextortion detection module intercepts that escalation in real time by identifying the characteristic conversational pattern of befriending, image solicitation and threat before harm occurs, flagging the exchange to a supervising adult or agency without requiring anyone to read the content of every message. As a Meta Business Partner with cross-platform monitoring across Instagram, Snapchat, Discord and other services used in these schemes, the system surfaces a child at acute risk the moment the threat trajectory becomes clear, enabling intervention before images are shared or payments demanded.
