FBI warns of spike in financial sextortion targeting minors, urges parents to monitor online activity

The Federal Bureau of Investigation issued a national alert on September 15, 2026, warning of a sharp increase in financial sextortion schemes targeting minors across the United States. The Bureau reported that offenders, often operating from West Africa and Southeast Asia, pose as young women on social media platforms including Instagram, Snapchat and gaming applications, then coerce teenage boys into sharing sexually explicit imagery before demanding payment under threat of exposure to family and peers. The FBI noted that at least a dozen cases in the past six months have resulted in victim suicides, and urged parents to discuss the threat with children and monitor their online interactions.
