FBI warns of spike in financial sextortion targeting minors on social platforms
Guardii Analysis
The US Federal Bureau of Investigation issued a public alert on 14 October 2024 warning of a sharp increase in financially motivated sextortion schemes targeting minors, particularly boys aged 14 to 17, on social media and gaming platforms. The FBI stated that offenders, often operating from West Africa and Southeast Asia, pose as young women to establish contact, manipulate victims into sharing explicit images, then threaten to release the material unless payment is made, with at least 20 suicides linked to sextortion in the past 18 months and losses reported in the millions of dollars.
Financially motivated sextortion follows a recognisable escalation pattern: rapid relationship-building, a request for intimate images, immediate demands for payment, and escalating threats. Guardii's anti-sextortion detection module identifies this coercive sequence in real time as it unfolds in direct messages across Instagram, Snapchat, Discord and other platforms, blocking the hostile contact before the demand or threat is delivered, surfacing the child at risk to a parent or safeguarding professional, and enabling immediate escalation to the FBI or local law enforcement, intercepting the harm at the point where intervention can still prevent both the financial loss and the psychological trauma the Bureau has documented.
