FBI warns of spike in AI-generated child sexual abuse material

Guardii Analysis

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has issued a public warning about a significant increase in artificial intelligence-generated child sexual abuse material, noting that offenders are using generative AI tools to create explicit imagery from benign photos of real children posted on social media. The FBI alert, published in November 2024, highlights that predators are manipulating ordinary photographs into sexually explicit deepfakes and using the synthetic material for sextortion, harassment and further exploitation. Law enforcement reports the material is increasingly difficult to distinguish from authentic abuse imagery and creates substantial psychological harm to victims whose likenesses are used.

The FBI's warning maps directly onto the threat Guardii's AI-generated CSAM detection module was designed to counter. As a Meta Business Partner and Startmate-backed online-safety platform, Guardii deploys real-time pattern recognition across Instagram, Snapchat, Discord and other messaging environments to identify the conversational signatures of deepfake sextortion and synthetic CSAM distribution: the demand for source images, coercive escalation, and the transmission of manipulated content itself. Because the platform monitors the shape and trajectory of a conversation rather than scanning every message, it can surface a child being targeted for image-based abuse to a parent, school counsellor or law enforcement before the harm compounds, offering a detection layer that operates inside the channels where AI-generated exploitation now unfolds at scale.
