FBI warns of 'sextortion' scams targeting minors through fake AI-generated explicit images
Guardii Analysis
The Federal Bureau of Investigation issued a public warning on 24 September 2024 concerning a sharp rise in financial sextortion schemes in which offenders use artificial intelligence tools to generate explicit images of minors from innocuous photographs sourced from social media, then threaten to distribute the synthetic material unless the victim pays. The Bureau reported that complaints involving AI-generated child sexual abuse material have increased significantly, with offenders operating primarily through direct messages on Instagram, Snapchat and other platforms, and noted that even a single clothed photograph can be manipulated into convincing explicit imagery.
Guardii's anti-sextortion detection module is built to identify the characteristic escalation and coercion dynamics of financial extortion before a demand is issued or a threat delivered. By analysing the shape of a conversation in real time rather than relying on retrospective keyword filters, the platform surfaces high-risk contact at the point it crosses into coercive territory, enabling a parent, school or law-enforcement partner to intervene while the minor is still in contact with the offender and before reputational or financial harm occurs, a capability that becomes urgent as synthetic-media tools lower the technical threshold for this category of abuse.
