FBI Warns of Rising AI-Generated Child Sexual Abuse Material and Sextortion Scams
Guardii Analysis
The Federal Bureau of Investigation has issued a public warning that criminals are increasingly using generative artificial intelligence to manipulate innocuous photos of minors into explicit imagery for sextortion schemes, with victims' images harvested from social media, school websites and family photography accounts. The Bureau reports that offenders threaten to release the fabricated material unless the victim produces additional explicit content or makes payments, and advises parents to limit children's online exposure and report incidents immediately to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
AI-generated deepfake abuse operates at speed and scale that outpaces manual moderation, but the coercive conversation itself—the demand, the threat, the escalation—leaves a detectable signature. Guardii's anti-sextortion and synthetic-CSAM detection modules, built to identify patterns of coercion and image-based abuse in direct messages across platforms including Instagram, Snapchat and Discord, intercept the extortion attempt as it unfolds, surfacing the child in crisis to a parent or authority before complying with a demand or suffering further harm, and enabling rapid escalation to law enforcement when the threat is acute.
