FBI warns of dramatic rise in sextortion targeting minors with AI-generated explicit images
Guardii Analysis
The FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center issued a public service announcement reporting a sharp increase in financially motivated sextortion schemes targeting minors through AI-generated sexually explicit imagery. Offenders are using publicly available photographs of children harvested from social media and video chat platforms, transforming them into nude or sexually explicit content via deepfake and nudification applications, then demanding payment under threat of distribution. The Bureau documented cases across multiple states in which perpetrators, often operating from Nigeria and Côte d'Ivoire, coerce victims as young as middle-school age by threatening to send the synthetic images to family, friends and schools unless a ransom is paid, frequently via cryptocurrency or gift cards.
Targeted anti-sextortion detection operating at the point of contact can interdict these schemes as they unfold. Guardii's real-time conversation analysis identifies the escalation pattern characteristic of financial sextortion, the language of coercion and the demand for payment or imagery, flagging the hostile contact before the synthetic material is distributed and before the child complies. By surfacing the threat to a parent or safeguarding team the instant the demand is made, Guardii enables intervention ahead of payment and psychological harm, addressing the vulnerability the FBI identifies without requiring children to surrender access to the platforms where their social lives occur.
