The bureau reports that offenders, many operating from overseas locations including West Africa and Southeast Asia, use social media platforms and gaming applications to establish contact with children, coerce them into sending explicit images, and then extort money under threat of distribution. The FBI recorded thousands of reports in the past year, with several cases resulting in victim suicides, and emphasizes that the crime is severely underreported because many young victims do not disclose the abuse to parents or authorities.
