The Federal Bureau of Investigation issued a public alert warning that financial sextortion schemes targeting minors have increased dramatically, with offenders predominantly operating from West Africa and Southeast Asia using social media platforms and gaming sites to contact victims. The schemes involve criminals posing as young women to solicit explicit images from teenage boys, then threatening to release the material unless payment is made. The FBI reported that at least 12,600 reports were received in the twelve months to March 2024, representing a sharp escalation in complaints, and that the activity has been linked to at least 20 suicides.
When a criminal has already obtained an image and issued a payment demand, the child is in immediate danger and detection must happen earlier in the exchange.
