FBI warns of dramatic rise in financial sextortion targeting minors

The FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center issued a public service announcement on 2 September 2024 reporting that financial sextortion schemes targeting minors resulted in at least 12,600 victims and losses exceeding 28 million dollars in the twelve months to March 2024, with the bureau warning that offenders increasingly operate from West Africa and Southeast Asia using social media platforms and gaming sites to make initial contact. The advisory noted that perpetrators pose as young women to deceive male victims aged 14 to 17 into sharing explicit images, then threaten distribution unless payment is made, and emphasised that many victims do not report due to shame or fear.

Real-time sextortion detection would address the coercion dynamic the FBI has documented.
